I took Japanese during the first two years I was in college. It was the ONLY class I put any effort into during those years because it took up all of my time. I still had a solid B average for all four semesters.

I still have the textbooks on my shelf, though. And, true story!, I spent my free time the weekend before last making kanji flashcards. Color coded ones. unsure

Learning Japanese for Busy People I,II and III. Get the kana version...it'll be stated on the cover. Each volume is one seperate book.
You should be able to get the latest revised edition from kinokuniya.

I only have volume I but its really easy to follow with the basics and grammar. Firstly you must learn to recognize hiragana and katakana, then kanji. I have no idea regarding the workbooks.

Try to google sites that teach you on how to pronounce the hiragana..its the same as katakana, just different writing.

From the time I entered highschool till now (7 years later) Ive wanted to learn Japanese but never really had the means to do so. Even in college, there are classes offered but my parents said they really dont want me wasting time and money taking them. For a while I even stopped thinking about Japanese and focused more on mandarin by watching subbed taiwanese dramas and listening to S.H.E and some other artists. But since I discovered Arashi Ive gotten even more interested in learning japanese than I was in the past. Now fortunately my mom gets access to Rosetta Stone so in my free time I try to fit lessons in but Id prefer real lessons and Id like to find good books to follow since Rosetta Stone doesnt focus directly on grammer and such. They just throw pictures at you and say pick one!

I've been independently studying since this past summer. I'm actually doing a poem contest at William Patterson University in May, where I have to recite a Japanese poem by Estuko Bushika (it's called Seinobi).

I've been craming lately though, since I might be going to Japan this summer, and I jjust got my letter of congratulations telling me that I am going Wohoo! and that I'll be living with a host family on summer homestay. I just don't know where in Japan yet. unsure

But, the book Japanese For Dummies (as silly as this sounds) really really helped me. I also just wanted to read it because the man that wrote it is a prefessor at the college I want to go to. smile

i took japanese lessons some time ago, know some simple words, therefore, every time when there is japanese words pop up on the screen, i would stop the play and try to read it, that is one way of learning the language. school is boring but watching my favoruite band and also learning the language is totally loving it.

I started teaching myself Japanese last December online. I found sites that taught me how to write Hiragana/Katakana and memorized how to write them. Then after - I thought - instead of just being content with knowing Kana I would also learn Kanji and so that's what I've been teaching myself lately. Found a site that teaches you all the Kanji that Japanese students learn in school.

Thankfully learning kanji is easy for me because I'm Chinese and I have a pretty good memory of what each Kanji means as well as how to read it/say it in Japanese, I also have a few books that are helping me. I'm also taking Japanese in my school currently... but still teaching yourself is hard because sometimes motivation is hard to come by. =P

i've been studying japanese independently for 7 years. but that wasnt very consistent. cos its really about discipline and being able to actually get the right text books and what not.

but i finally got the chance to study it properly when i started taking it as an elective at the uni for the past 2 years.

unfortunately they dont offer level 5 as an elective at the uni, and i'll have to prepare for JLTP 3 at an external language school this year. Only after obtaining a JLTP 3 cert and taking a placement exam, would i be qualified to take level 6 back at my uni.

talk about being complicated. *lol*

Its amazing how much you can learn just by listening to songs. Ive decided this recently. Most of my limited vocabulary is from Arashi songs. With the help of the wonderful Stormy team's karaoke subs haha. I recently found a (very old) Learn Japanese program online as well as a textbook pdf and I have been using Rosetta Stone. Starting this fall I am signed up for a class. Hopefully I can keep up with it (I barely made it through my required 2 years of language in high school (in my defense its hard to keep up with a dead language--I took latin)) but seeing as im actually interested in the language it should be okay...Im so excited to start!

I'm actually learning on my own since my school doesn't offer Japanese. Hopefully the college I plan on applying to offers it - since I plan on having some sort of a career in business that involves me flying from Japan to the US and back.

So far, I have hiragana and katakana etched into my brain but when it comes to kanji, I'm horrible. I consider it a disgrace to my Chinese roots since kanji are basically Chinese characters with the same meaning but different pronunciation.

It still takes me some time to recognize and put together a coherent sentence using hiragana in place of kanji.

Ahhhh, I'd say my level of Japanese would be much more lower than the average Japanese preschooler. But thanks to me watching Arashi's variety shows, I've improved a lot. smile
