香港人, but I can't type Chinese and my writing in Chinese is about third grade level. So I shall leave this thread now. :P Currently living in Canada.

You can start learning from the vowels I think.
Like a,i,u,e,o..you know? With 4 tone variations each alphabet,from lowest to highest(1,2,3,4).
Its easier to pronounce the words from here.

There are two types of Chinese characters, simplified(easy way of writing,used in Singapore & China) and traditional(like kanji characters,used in Taiwan & Hongkong)..even their vowels are not in english form.
So which type would you want to learn?

If you're keen on going to taiwan or something, its best to learn Chinese from a Taiwanese. You can start from language books.
Alternatively you can listen to Chinese music, and learn from the lyrics.

Any Mandarin singer you know of/interested in? Try searching for their mp3s and lyrics.Being a Chinese myself, I improved fastest this way when I was young.

Feel free to post up words in English so that we can help you out in Chinese.

I'm half Chinese and I speak Chinese, but I can't type Chinese now cause I'm using my friend's computer^^;

i'm actually japanese, so i use kanji frequently...will that come in handy??

原本還以為今年或許會過個好新年﹐到頭來反而比以前更糟了。

興高采烈地準備迎接新年﹐我還算第一次。第一次為了新年買新衣﹐還買了好幾套﹔第一次好好來個大掃除﹔第一次記下要與誰拜年 -- 回頭想想﹐還真是白費心機。

家裡﹐好像因為多種是非﹐吵得日夜不休的。大家的脾氣一樣暴躁 (沒辦法﹐是genes搞怪)﹐誰都不肯讓誰。雖然說我們家一直都會有這種“不吵不痛快” 的傾向﹐但從來都不會吵到連團圓飯都不吃的啊。。。

其實﹐事情根本沒那麼嚴重。怎麼﹐今年﹐非但沒吃團圓飯﹐大年初一的拜年禮也省了(我的紅包哇。。。) 天殺的﹐我是很討厭紅色﹐但為了迎新年特地買了兩套紅色套裙。這下子可好了﹐初一被媽媽拉到個不知名的地方﹐誰也不見﹐更沒機會穿那兩套裙子了。這輩子休想叫我買紅衣了﹐有夠衰的。

拜託﹐別再吵了。要不﹐到別的地方吵啦。勘弁してくれ、我年尾還有政府考試啊。。。倒霉投了﹐真是的。好不容易能夠聚在一起﹐卻吵架﹐沒腦袋嗎﹖受害者還不是自己的孩子嘛(表弟妹也真的受夠了)﹐我的除夕夜是在24小時KFC快餐店自己過的﹐你們大人懂個屁﹗

初一初二﹐就關在房裡對著Pre-U Physics一直做一直做﹐心情越爛就越要做。我累﹐面對幼稚的大人們﹐更累。

沒有團圓的除夕﹐我寧願在寂靜中度過。
