instead of lactose intolerant, I can't take soy milk.. ^^
just the smell of soy milk can make me puke (sorry for the word), I wonder why...
oh, but I also can't take chocolate milk... chocolate's fine, milk's fine, but I can't take chocolate milk just like I can't take soy milk... I think I'm weird... ~sigh~

I'm not lactose intolerant... although if I do become lactose intolerant it'd become a nightmare on my part because I love milk... ~sigh~

By the way a random question... How do you become lactose intolerant? Or is it that you really are lactose intolerant from the beginning? Eh? I hope I made sense.. confused

I am lactose intolerant and a science-y person, so please excuse me if I bore you all to tears, but here goes....

Lactose is a sugar in found only in milk. People who are intolerant are lacking the enzyme (found in the small intestine) to break it down into simple sugars. The level of enzyme varies between individuals, so in most cases it's more of a deficiency that a complete absence. Milk allergy is a completely different thing and much more serious. Intolerance is just where you can't digest it, allergy means your own immune system flairs up when it comes into contact with it

There are a few different types of lactose intolerance.
- You can become temporarily intolerant due to an intestinal infection, from which you can recover your dairy tolerance as long as you don't rule out milk completely from then on.
- Natural reduction of lactase is normal as you age when enzyme levels decrease. Many people become intolerant in old age.
- Genetically some races are more prone to lactose intolerance than others. It is more common in Asians, Africans and Eskimo. They think it's something to do with evolution paired with cattle rearing practices. Usually you lose the ability to digest milk around weaning age/teenage years (makes sense if you think about it)
- Some people are born lactose intolerant. It's quite rare, but most developed countries have compulsory screening at birth for it, because otherwise you'd be breastfed milk and be really really unwell....

There is some truth in having more lactose to stop yourself from being intolerant, because if anyone stops having dairy, their lactase levels will drop. I think if you're naturally intolerant though, you can only bring it up to a certain level...

Some dairy products have higher or lower levels of lactose.
> Many people find heating milk makes it ok compared to cold milk (something to do with breaking down the sugars with heat perhaps? I'm not sure on this one).
> Some cheeses can be ok if your lactase levels aren't too low. Mature cheeses are lower in lactose.
> Yoghurt is fairly low in lactose, especially if it's a probiotic one because the bacteria make some of their own lactase.

The less obvious ingredient to look for on labels is whey powder - it's fairly concentrated in lactose (in the process of separating curds and whey most of the lactose ends up in the solid whey bit), so if it's one of the first in the list, I'd be careful!

If you sometimes seem ok with dairy but then it sometimes ends in disaster consider the concentration of lactose in what you're eating and how much of it you're eating, e.g. a small spoonful of icecream might have the same amount as a whole block of cheese.

For me, I have gotten used to western style soya milk for having in cups of tea, but as a drink in itself Chinese soya milk is much nicer. Since became easy to find in the UK I've been using lactose free milk as it works much better in cooking.
If anyone else has a question, I'd be happy to do my best to answer it!

i don't think it would be difficult. everytime i go to the the sakura matsuri in san francisco, there's always a stall that gives out free japanese soy milk samples.

i'm sort of lactose intolerant; i don't have a very severe reaction, but it's enough to cause some discomfort.

i am also lactose intolerant...

But I am not always lactose intolerant.
I can eat Low-fat or non-fat milk or yogurt and gelato (YUM!). Buffalo cheese, mozzarella cheese are also okay.

But I cannot eat ice-cream (BYE BYE HAAGEN DAZ and Ben & Jerry), or cheese with high-fat content because i will get really sick.

Anyone has the same problem?

like some of you , I also drink soya milk but I can only drink soya milk without preservatives. I am allergic to preservatives in soya milk..

my allergies are kind of weird...

i used to drink soy milk, but then i discovered lucern lactose-free milk. it is sooo delicious and apparently it doesn't spoil as fast as regular whole milk (so says my sister). problem is, it's kinda expensive, so sometimes i'll just get 2% milk hoping i can process the lactose. that's how i know i'm not horribly lactose intolerant. *phew* what a relief.

I'm currently Lactose Intolerant. I was so when I was a little (I believe I was born lactose intolerant...), and then for some reason I wasn't anymore, then about 4 years ago I became lactose intolerant again... >_< It's not that bad for me though, because dairy pretty much just gives me a stomach ache which goes away after an hour or so.
