I'm studying Japanese at my high school-- I just took Japanese I this past year and after vacation, I'll be in II and III, learning Kanji and all that spiffiness X3
I'm also trying to learn it on my own, because I like knowing more than the kids in my class XD (but it's almost next to impossible since most of them are like me and are rabid otakus and whatnot lol)
On days when our sensei isn't there, we end up watching films like Ping Pong! and Train Man. =] And every other year, we have the option to go with her to Japan. Unfortunately, I didn't go this year lol
But yeah, I've got a bunch of vocab down as well as the particles, but I'm not good enough yet XD

I'm currently self-studying Basic Nihongo based on my brother's book. He had formal lessons in Japanese a couple of years ago and had books about it. I'm still learning basic sentence structuring, in romanji. Hope to learn Kanji someday... ^__^
ok, my japanese study so far includes:
-watch lots of arashi vids
-watch them all many times..
-watch even the unsubbed version, esp. on youtube
-try guessing the meaning by grasping bits of words they say
-laugh even if i dont really understand them all
haha..now i can like, catch some familiar, everyday bits of the words
I studied Japanese at school. It was an extracurricular lesson I took at a different school. Although I took the class for 2 years whilst I was 17/18 years old, the qualification it lead to was for school age 16. I try to keep my Japanese sharp, although I know that I've forgotten a lot of what I've learnt already, but whenever I can clearly distinguish Japanese from anime/drama, I write it down. I find that I still struggle most with grammar, and the variety shows don't really help with all Arashi's very masculine and conversational language.
A good study tool I've been recommended from a friend is a flashcard-style program called

I've been studying Japanese for almost a year now
I'm planning to minor in it...but we'll see how it goes!
So far I've been trying to watch Arashi videos without the subs to see if I can understand it...and I can only understand bits of it
I haven't been practicing my kanji...and it's already going down the drain...

i've been studying japanese on my own.
i can write n read hiragana n katagana..but my kanji is very very limited.
my younger brother is studying japanese in his uni since he will be taking engineering in tokyo next year.
and my younger sister is taking degree in japanese human and culture..so naturally she knows japanese languange.
i really envy them..since none of the are into japanese music or drama.
they are just learning the languange cos they have to sice they will be learning in jap.
Just started to learn on my own a few weeks earlier. Hiragana is quite cleared so I'll be starting with katakana next.
As for kanji..well..I know the kanji for storm..
Like in the past year my dream has been to become fluent in another language I hated French in school so I dropped it (now regretting it) so I decided to teach myself German because German's cool! Yeah, that didn't work out either because I lost interest.
Then one day I say a Japanese movie and thought "hey, Japanese's cool!" and I reallly got into teaching myself hiragana and katakana until I then learned that there are thousands of other symbols, aka kanji
But I didn't give up and that's when I knew that Japanese is going to become my second language
And plus I looked up Arashi thinking that Japanese music can help me learn unbeknowst that they would become one of my favorite bands ever!

There are several Japanese language and culture classes at my college - so I have been taking those for about two semesters. It's really a lot of fun, not only do you become proficient in Hiragana and Katakana quickly, they teach you how to communicate with a native Japanese speaker so you gain a lot of confidence that way.
I'm actually japanese, but i've lived in america for more than half my life, so english pretty much dominates my life right now... My parents speak to me in japanese, but i reply back in english...
BUT i want to go to a japanese uni, possibly waseda (i probably won't get in...) so i'm really thinking about moving to japan, before i graduate high school, probably next year. for now, i'm taking private tutor lessons once every week, and buying bunko (literature books) from nearby japanese bookstores.. my japanese IS fluent, but i can't really read kanji....
that is my "life" story
im also taking japanese lessons started from tomorrow and im started at a really young age so i can become fluent and move to japan when im older.becoming the 2nd langauge i have to take this i can talk in english(no duh) and cantonese fluently(though im losing it) i'm also taking maderine (sp??) and japenese THATS FOUR HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO REMEMBER THEM ALL!!!!! hohpe i dont get lazy as i usually do
i also stopped because because im a freshman in highschool right now and im taking spanish i dont now why because i asked for french anyways im going to start again in college and im going to study abroad in japan
