A/N: this is set in Jun's last year of high school. Just a small idea that I was playing with in my mind. I hope you like it.
“Admit it! You like Matsumoto-kun, don’t you?” Fukuhara Sae asked Aizawa Nami as she leaned closer, her hands propping her chin up. It was the latter part of their lunch break and the girls were able to relax before the final lessons started. She had been trying to get her friend to admit this since they had entered high school two years ago. It was the most obvious thing, but Nami would not admit to it. As long as she would not admit it, Sae kept on trying. It bothered her that Nami would not tell the truth. Sae had to restrain her self many times from strangling Nami out of frustration.
Sae was one of those girls who took everything logically and straight forward. Many people were surprised to see that she was best friends with Nami, who was…to put it in simple words, a ditz. She was slow and honest with the best intentions for everyone she met. Sae, in truth, hated people like Nami who thought every human being is made of nice bones. She hated them. But Nami, she couldn’t hate for reasons she didn’t even know herself.
“Wh-what?!” Nami’s face turned bright red. “I don’t know what you’re talking about! Me? L-like Jun-kun?” with the mention of his name together with the word ‘me’ and ‘like’, Nami’s face, no, body, turned a shade darker. Sae chuckled at her friend’s honesty.
“You should tell him. You know, he likes you back too?” she cocked her head to the side, raising her eyebrows.
“Shh!” Nami exclaimed. “Don’t say that too loud! Rumors will start!” Nami nervously glanced around the classroom where other classmates either sat in groups talking like she was with Sae, or were outside.
“Rumors? But Nami, everyone knows that Matsumoto-kun li—” Nami covered Sae’s mouth before Sae could finish what she was saying.
“Rumors!” she warned. Phew! That was a close one! She thought to herself. Good thing I know how to lie or else Sae would figure it out! Though, there was an obvious smile on her face. Sae just shook her head and gave up, changing the subject.
“When do you want to go shopping?”
“Oh! We should go today!”
“We have juku after this…” Sae reminded. Nami frowned as she was reminded of the after school cram schooling.
“I think I want to get my hair cut,” she switched the subject. Nami played with her hair. It reached a few inches below her shoulders. Sae gazed at Nami’s hair. Why? She wanted to ask. It’s so pretty as it is. Sae then reached up to her hair, which was short and reached her chin. She had always admired Nami who had long girly hair with layers that curved around her face perfectly.
“You know, Matsumoto-kun likes longer hair…” Sae said under her breath.
“Hm?” Nami glanced at her friend, a pleasant smile on her face. She clearly had not heard the last comment. Soon, Nami’s face was back to normal and her body heat had cooled.
“Hey, Aizawa,” a boy with medium length black hair and thick eye brows came running into the classroom. Sae smirked as Nami turned around, gasped, and quickly faced Sae with a panicked and pink face.
“What should I do?” she mouthed, shutting her eyes tight. Jun-kun’s here? I thought he was busy with TV today? Why is he here? Sae sat in front of her friend, an amused smile playing on her lips.
“Matsumoto-kun,” she greeted the young boy who nodded at her before directing his attention down to Nami who was facing her lap. “What’s up?”
“I was wondering…” he paused. “Did you get the notes for English, math, and science?” he glanced from Sae to Nami. Sae waited for Nami to answer, Jun seeming to be feeling the same way. On the other hand, Nami squeezed her eyes shut, clenching her fists, hoping, praying, that Sae would answer for her. When Sae realized this, she rolled her eyes and let out an annoyed sigh and kicked Nami’s shin underneath the desk.
“Owe!” Nami jumped, causing her to open her eyes and look at Sae who was giving her a look as if telling her to answer. But I’ll make a fool of myself! Nami cried in her mind as she soothed her shin and looked up at Jun, her face turning from pink to red. “Y-yea, I took notes. Do you want to look at them?” she smiled slightly, turning around to her desk and taking out her notebooks.
“Thanks so much Aizawa! I appreciate it!” Jun grinned, flipping through the notes. “Your notes are always the best!”
“Awe shucks, you make me turn pink!” Nami giggled. Sae rolled her eyes.
“No kidding.” Sae sarcastically said, not getting any attention from the other two.
“What happened to work?” Sae watched as her best friend’s red face gradually returned to the normal shade of a human being, talking to her obvious lover boy. She wondered to herself why the two were so oblivious to each other’s feelings, when anyone who walked into the classroom would be able to tell that the two liked each other. Why was it that Jun never noticed that whenever Nami first see him in the day, or first talk to him in the day, her face would turn bright red? Or that she would stutter and be shy at first before relaxing into her normal ditzy state? Why was it that Nami didn’t notice the special treatment Jun had with her? How his eyes would gleam, how he would always grin and laugh at any joke Nami would work hard to muster up even when it was something that she learned in first grade? Those questions were wonders not only to Sae, but the whole junior class of the school.
“Sae? Sae?” Nami waved her hand in front of her friend’s face. When she got no reaction, her heart started to race. A different kind of racing from when she saw Jun, but a panicking race. “Oh my gosh! Someone call the teacher!” she screamed, the chair screeching as she stood up. The students in the classroom all jumped up, surprised by Nami’s sudden behavior, though, they really should be used to it by now. “Sae! She’s gone into coma!” Sae, who by then was done with her deep thinking, looked up at Nami with scrutinizing eyes.
“Nami,” she sighed, shaking her head. “You are such an idiot. Why does he like you?”
“What do you mean?” Nami sat back down, her heart calming down. The rest of the class rolled their eyes before going back to what they were doing before Nami had caused a slight commotion.
“Aizawa?” Jun returned back into the classroom.
“Jun-kun! Is there a problem with my notes?” Sae noticed Nami’s cheeks turn pink. Jun shook his head, looking nervous. She then noticed that his cheeks were slightly pink also. This is it! Sae thought, sitting up straight. He’s going to ask her out! “Do you have a fever?” Nami stood up slowly when she saw his cheeks turning pink. Sae smacked her forehead. Jun just shook his head.
“I…” he took in a deep breath. “I was wondering if you could come to the roof for a second?” Nami cocked her head to the side before nodding, looking confused. Jun grinned and led her out.
“I’ll be back soon, Sae!” she waved as she left. The rest of the students watched in amazement. It was finally happening. As soon as the two were out of sight, the students, including Sae, followed them up to the roof where they hid behind the door, listening to them talk.
“You look pretty,” Jun said in an awkward voice. Nami’s face turned pink. I look pretty? She touched her cheek. “You always do.” this sent Nami’s face burning.
“Awe, Jun-kun you’re so sweet. I bet that’s how you get girls to fall for you! You use your charm!” I can’t let him think I like him! I’ll make a fool of myself if he thinks I like him! She sighed a relief when she saw Jun smirk.
“What girls?” he laughed. “I don’t have any girls falling for me…” he turned around, giving her a serious face. “But I wish I had one.”
“Oh! You want me to help you? Is it Sae?” though she sounded excited, Nami’s heart was pounding both in pain and anxiety of wanting to know who Jun’s crush was. “If it’s Sae, I can help you big time! She’s such a nice girl!” On the other side of the door, Sae was restraining herself from strangling someone.
“It’s not Fukuhara,” Jun took in a deep breath. “I…I need your help for me to get this girl to like me,” he walked over, taking out a picture from his pocket. Jun’s heart pounded as he saw Nami reach for the picture and take it from him. He held his breath as Nami looked at the picture with a pleasant smile before realizing who was on the picture.
“Eh?” Nami shook her head. “But, how can I help you?” she frowned, looking at Jun with confusion. “I can’t help you if you give me my school picture…” she handed the picture back. Jun laughed.
“I knew I should have just told you,” he took a step closer, placing only a few inches between the two. “I like you. I like you a lot,” Nami gasped as Jun smiled. “Will you go out with me?”
“B-but, work? What about work?” Nami stammered. The words that were thrown at her, no matter how much she wanted to catch, she couldn’t seem to grasp just yet. Those words hadn’t hit her yet.
“I know I’ll be busy with work now that Arashi started. I know that we won’t be able to go out like a normal couple…but I really like you. I’ve liked you since middle school. I just want to be with you.”
“Middle school?” Nami was more confused then ever. She had known about Jun for a long time. Ever since she had first seen him on TV, she had fallen in love. She was shocked when she saw his name on her class list. In fact, if Sae had not been with her, she probably would have fainted right there on the spot. It was a dream, for her to even become classmates, let alone friends with Jun. And now, the guy who she had idolized since before she could remember was asking her out?
“When I came to take a look at the school, to see if I would want to come here, I saw you taking your test, that’s when I decided that I wanted to come here. So I could get to know you.”
“You…did?” He inched closer.
“So, I’ll ask again, will you be mine?” Nami smiled and nodded her bright red face many times. Jun embraced her at the same time the students watching the show let out a sigh of relief.
“Finally,” Sae slumped. “Now I don’t have to put up with Nami denying herself.” But what poor Sae did not realize was that Nami denying herself was much easier to put up with the stupid couple that she was going to have to put up with from now on.
