I finally did it!! I put off watching"Letters from Iwo Jima" when it was out in the theaters to save up to buy the DVD released version.
and I did! a few days ago, I stopped by a local Best Buy store and bought the HD DVD + standard DVD box set for $34.99 USD~
picture clear quality and totally supporting Nino! woot! unfortunately (but in a way fortunately), Nino looked his part as a Japanese soldier. The only downside? My brother commenting on how "chickened out" his character was by wanting to stay alive and such.
but it's human nature to fight to live, ne? There's no honor in suicide.....no matter the Japanese views on it being that there is.
I was finally able to watch this movie. Ah~ it was good. I watched it twice in one day: once by myself and once with my dad. I love the part when Saigo had to dump out the bucket. Overall, Nino did a wonderful job playing his part.
I've also noticed that Saigo actually did little fighting in the movie. Most of the time he was either escaping death in many ways or running errands for people. Wow, I'd say he was one extremely lucky man.

I think that his character didn't want to fight...
Also if anyone has watched the 2-Disc version, in a extra they're showing the red carpet premiere and while they're showing an interview with Mr. Eastwood you can distinctly hear "NINO! NINO! NINO!!!" In the background...
My friend and I were cracking up up at his

I was finally able to buy this movie last Saturday & it comes w/ the second disc that has the special features in it. I just kept watching the special features discs & kept on forwarding it to when Nino was speaking. And I was so happy to heared some girls yelling "NINO! NINO!".
i finally watched the movie a week ago with my best friend and my dad. my comments/thoughts? i thoroughly enjoyed it. i thought the whole cast did a wonderful job with the acting; Nino played his part with a lot of heart, and Ken Watanabe... well, what can i say... excellent. i don't know how to explain it... the movie was full of.... dignity and a sense of honor. i highly recommend it, like many of you already have
Ok, usually, I don't really like war movies, but ever since I found out that Nino was in this movie, I decided to watch it.
And I reallyyyyy liked it! I thought he did a very good job on the role and Clint Eastwood is such a good director.
This movie's very interesting and shows a side of war that we usually don't see. I recommend this movie to everyone!
i love saigo's character. for a man in that period of time, he was pretty liberal. i cried so much when he was saying good bye to his wife. but he looks so young to be married. but all in all, he's acting was outstanding. and watanabe ken definitely transforms himself for every role he takes.
This film is awesome, I loved it, and I would still have loved it even if Nino wasnt on it. The story is great , also because when you see films about World War its always on the american point of view, making the Japanese seem horrible people. I loved this film because ot shows the japanese perpectives of the war.
This was the first time I saw Nino acting, and it was amazing, I didnt know he was such a good actor! The role is very complex, and he did it so well, he is indeed very talented

Clint Eastwood is a genius in movie making. His work is really good. The fact Nino played one of the two main characters in the movie was amazing. He did an amazing job.I was REALLY suprised at the end of the movie how he was attacking the Amarican soldiers it was a really great acting part!
The only downside? My brother commenting on how "chickened out" his character was by wanting to stay alive and such.

i don't think it's about him being 'chickened out' or anything.. but simply more of his promise to his wife and unborn child that he'll come back to them.. and he's trying his best to live up to his promise..
i've never really liked war movies either.. but i actually like this nino did a great job playing saigo, potraying his will and desire to live, despite the war
