Chapter 3
Had it not been for my job, I would have gone crazy from missing Sho the entire week. I was working with my former boss's sister, Ayeka-san, as the Wardrobe Manager in her private modeling studio. One thing about Ayeka-san, was that she was the polar opposite of Aya-san. She was much more easy going, never stressed or uptight, and she shut down the studio on weekends because she simply "wanted to sleep in on some days."
Being about ten years younger than my former boss, Ayeka-san was always on the top of wild fashion. She had begged me to let her give me a makeover, which in the end I finally gave in to. Not wearing much makeup in the first place, eye shadow, lipstick and thick mascara made me feel like I was wearing a mask. I didn't like it at all and neither did Sho. I apologized sincerely to Ayeka-san the next day when I arrived looking like my usual self. She was disappointed at first, but later said I was gorgeous with the "al natural" look anyway. I knew it just a matter of time before she started to bug me about my choice of clothes and hairstyle.
"Minako-chan, how long have you had your hair that way?" Ayeka-san asked me during lunch. I looked up at her worriedly and my hand unconsciously flew to the side of my head.
"Um... a few years probably... maybe more?" I answered slowly. Ayeka-san got up from her chair, and peered closer at my hair through her black rimmed glasses.
"Is this wave natural?" she asked me, running her slender fingers down my hair.
"Hai..." I answered quietly and a bit uncomfortably. Unlike Aya-san, Ayeka-san had no sense of personal boundaries.
"For once, you are in style, Minako-chan! We could take a few inches off the ends so it bounces over your shoulders... and maybe switch your part to the left instead of the right... perhaps some layers too..." Ayeka said more to herself than to me. She crouched down in front of me, staring at my unsure face.
"Ano... Ayeka-san... I don't really want to change it..." I said quietly. Ayeka-san pouted her thick lips and scowled at me.
"With a perfect shaped face like yours', shorter hair would look much more attractive. But, until you want to change it, at least wear barrettes? Or perhaps ribbon?" Ayeka-san said with a smile. I nodded in understanding but never promised anything. I wasn't one to ever fuss about my appearance, just as long as I looked presentable was enough for me.
As Ayeka-san sat back down in her seat, I saw her eyeing my clothes. She turned towards me again and asked me to stand up. Cautiously I stood up and backed up so she could look me over. What was wrong with my clothes? Jeans... a white Oxford shirt and a black vest... what could be wrong with that? Ayeka-san narrowed her eyes at me and smiled.
"Maybe you're getting some fashion sense working around here! You have nice legs, you should show them off, Minako-chan." Ayeka-san said as turned back to her lunch.
"...I don't really wear short things, Ayeka-san..." I said quietly, sitting back down and trying to shake off the uncomfortable feeling.
"Eh? You've got a great figure, Minako-chan! Are you sure you don't want to model? I'm sure I could get you a spot." Ayeka-san offered loudly.
"Gomen... I just don't... really want to do that..." I said slowly, trying not to offend Ayeka.
"What a modest girl you are! If your mind changes, let me know." Ayeka-san said with a smile and a wink before excusing herself from her office. I sat quietly by myself, still shaking off the uncomfortable feeling of being examined. I liked Ayeka-san a lot, but her blunt and shrewd observing personality often left me feeling like I was violated.
Picking up my lunch, I walked out of Ayeka-san's office and into my own, next door. I closed the door and sighed in relief. Working here, I actually had my own office that I could decorate however I wished. While Ayeka-san had posters of famous, foreign models and movie stars, I had posters of the latest movies and pictures of my favourite anime. Setting down on my small couch, I took out my phone to check messages. Nothing new. Slightly disappointed, my mind wandered to what Sho could be doing... possibly some interviews? I decided to send him a message.
"Are we still okay for this weekend?" I mumbled to myself as I quickly text the same thing. After pressing send, I placed it on my desk, not expecting him to get it right away. There was a knock at my door.
"Hai?" I called as I gathered some papers off my desk.
"Minako-chan! Aiba-san is here! And he brought Matsumoto-san!" I heard Ayeka-san's breathless voice whisper. I whirled around and saw Ayeka-san opening my door, letting in a very bouncy Aiba and a usually composed Jun. Ayeka-san gave me a giant wink and a thumbs up before shutting my door.
"Jun? I didn't know you were coming too!" I said with a startled smile. He set down a lunch bag on my coffee table and smiled.
"I actually ran into Aiba on his way here... I hope you don't mind-"
"Oh! No, not at all!" I tried to say without sounding panicky. "Let me just find something for us to drink... uh, Aiba? Could you help?" I said quickly, rushing to my door. Aiba quickly followed and shut the door behind us. I walked in circles out in the hall, trying to shake off the panic.
"Are you okay?" Aiba asked curiously. I cast a glare at him.
"You could have warned me! A message or something!" I whispered furiously. Aiba looked confused as I took deep breaths.
"You're still...?" Aiba whispered pointing to my office.
"I'm still trying! Seeing him isn't going to help." I said, finally getting a grip on myself.
"Okay... let's find something to drink... I think there might be some coffee, tea..." I mumbled to myself, looking down the hall towards the lounge.
"I haven't see you like this since Nino's birthday!" Aiba said slightly amused, following me down the hall. I massaged my temples and forced a smile.
"I'm glad you find me amusing, Aiba-chan..." I said quietly. While we were in the lounge getting coffee for the three of us, Aiba asked endless questions about my weekend with Sho. At first I wasn't paying much attention but I had to stop him once he started to ask some rather personal questions.
"Why not?" Aiba asked over and over as we carried the drinks back to my office.
"Because
you don't need to know. Now... let's just get through this without ruining everything, okay?" I said quietly as we reached my door. Aiba nodded in understanding and entered my office. Pausing slightly, I took another deep breath to calm my nerves before going through with the surprise visit.
